For most of the Moroccan families with an average income, staying in a classified Marrakech hotel was just a dream as the owners and managers of those hotels tend to focus more on tourists coming from Europe and some parts of the other continents. Most of those international tourists come in couples without children or friends travelling together.
Few years ago, however, the officials in the hotel industry in Marrakech and the other cities in Morocco started to get interested in local tourism more and more. The reason behind that interest was to balance the shortfall in the number of the overnights stay left by international tourists due to political and economic crisis: Gulf War, attacks of September 11, terrorist attacks in Morocco and Europe committed by fundamentalist Muslims, kidnapping of foreign tourists in Muslim countries ... etc.
This political instability affected directly and negatively the number of tourists heading to any particular destination, and for that reason the officials of the hotel industry tried to create alternative solutions to find an outlet for this decline in the number of tourists to save the touristic season and give a boost to certain destinations. Tourism officials in Morocco launched several programs dedicated exclusively to encourage local tourism by offering very competitive prices.
A special program to encourage Moroccan families and couples to Marrakech vacation was then offered in a kind of partnership between the Marrakech hotels and the other cities of the kingdom and the concerned ministries. The Marrakech hotels proposed promotional prices to these families especially in summer time when Marrakech suffers most from the decline in the number of overnight stays due to the heat waves in that period of the year.
This promotional program devoted to the average Moroccan families and couples to spend their Marrakech holidays was maintained for few years but was later abandoned.
